Fixed up a batch of homemade croutons. Although most of the recipes I glanced at said to use stale bread I just used the fresh sandwich sliced bread I had on hand.
I cut up/cubed three slices of the bread and put that to the side. Then put some olive oil in a dish with an eyeballed equal amount of butter, that looked to be enough to coat the bread, and put that in the microwave to melt.
Next I added some Johnny's Garlic Spread and Seasoning to the melted oil/butter along with some grated 5 cheese blend from a shaker. After that I dumped the bread pieces into the mix and tossed it around to try and get all the bread pieces coated, since I couldn't find a brush to spread it directly on the bread.
The oven was preheated to 350 degrees, so once I laid out the coated bread pieces on a cookie sheet, I put 'em in the oven and set the timer for fifteen minutes, but they didn't look browned enough after that time passed, so I kept them in for five more minutes. They came out okay, but some pieces got more of the coating than others, so I'd find a brush to more evenly apply the seasoned oil/butter next time around.
They're not quite as crunchy as store bought croutons, but I'm guessing that's because the bread wasn't stale to start, and I might have over saturated some of the pieces with other bits getting less.
I think I'll make more, and perhaps add some minced up hot and sweet jalapeƱos to the buttery garlic cheesy concoction...
